Master Abstract

Abstract: previous researches for the causes of burnout has mainly been concerned with external triggers, such as work criteria , organizational or social influences. On the other hand, the question repeatedly posed is, why under the same working conditions, one individual burns out, while another shows no symptoms at all. It seems fair to assume that other cause such as personality traits and coping strategies may also play a role but such factors have largely been ignored as possible etiology of burnout development. Aim of the study: this study aims to explore the relationship between personality traits, coping strategies and burnout among nurses to determine which personality traits can cope with job related stress. Methods: the scale of this study were selected according to their relevance for descriptive theories reported in scientific literature. Data were gathered from all available trainees in kaser El–Aini nursing development center, n=94. the Minnesota multi physic inventory (MMPI) (Hathaway et al. 1937, Melaika, 2000) was used as well as Maslash burnout inventory (MBI) Maslash and Jakson, 1981, Mahgoub and Abed El Hameed, 1991), and coping strategies scale (Ibrahim 1994). Personality traits have less mean score of burnout in most scale of traits, and the difference was found to be highly significant for depression, hysteria and schizophrenia, and significant for psychopathic deviation, paranoia and psychiathenia. Yet the difference was not proved to be statistically significant, for hypochondrias, masculinity\femininity, male and female hypomania, and social introversion. Moreover, positive relation was found between burnout and personality traits, yet the difference not up to the level of significance except for hysteria , paranoia and pschiathenia. Meanwhile the difference was fond to be highly significant for psychopathic deviation and schizophrenia. Concerning, coping strategies in general there was a little differences between coping strategies score in relation to different level of personality traits. Masculinity \ femininity female, ordinary level present the highest mean of coping strategies and the difference was proven to be statistically significant. Meanwhile male got the lowest mean score and the difference; yet not up to the level of significance. Noticeable level of hypomania got the second mean score of coping strategies. Positive relation was found between mean score of psychopathic deviation, paranoia, and psychiathenia, schizophrenia, hypomania, social introversion and coping strategies, yet this relation was not proved to be statistically significant except for schizophrenia. Moreover, negative relation was found between hypochondrias, depression, hysteria, masculinity\femininity, male, and female, yet this relation was not proved to be statistically significant. Concerning the personality traits, burnout, coping strategies and socio-demographic data, in relation to personality traits, no significant differences for years of experience. Age, except for hysteria, sex. Except for masculinity\femininity, male and female. Concerning the burnout, there is a significant differences between age, years of experience, and position of work for coping strategies. Conclusion and recommendation: personality traits and coping strategies should be considered in selection strategies as a preventive measure to burnout.

PHD Abstract

When mothers wok nontraditional or nonstandard shifts, traditional family role are disrupted, with likely effects on children's psychological outcomes. This study aim was to investigate the effects of traditional and nontraditional mother's work on their children psychological outcomes. The study was carried out on 40 children whose mothers has non-traditional jobs, and another 40 with mothers having traditional jobs, in the nursery of Kaser El Aini university hospital. The tool of data collection were family culture and socioeconomic level scale, Ain Shams scale for aggressive and behavior filled through interviewing child and mothers, and the attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) scale for children filled by mother or caregiver and teacher or nursery supervisor independently. The result revealed that children of non traditional mothers' work had significantly more verbal (p= 0.006) and the total (p=0.005) aggression. They also had significantly more hyperactive impulsive (p=0.001) and obsessional deviant disorder (p<0.001). statically significant positive weak to moderate correlations were revealed between aggression and ADHD scores, with the strongest correlation between aggression and obsessional deviant disorder (r=0.639). in conclusion, children in the nontraditional group have higher rates of both verbal and total aggression as well as ADHD behavioral manifestations. It is recommended that high quality nurseries be provided to the mothers who work, especially in nontraditional jobs. A psychiatric mental health nurse should be included in the nurseries team. Further research is needed to assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions on the psychological outcomes of children of women with nontraditional jobs. Key words: nontraditional mother work, aggression, attention deficit and hyperactive disorder.
