The purpose of intensive care units was to locate groups of patients together who had similar needs for specialized monitoring and care so that highly trained health care personnel should be available to meet these specialized needs. So, the critical care nurse is responsible and accountable for the development and application of standards and research to enhance the quality of care to the critically ill patient and family. So, the purpose of this study was to identify the role of the nurse toward the critically ill patient this aim accomplish through assess the nurse knowledge about care provides for critically patients and assess the nurses performance related to specific care measures. The population of this study consisted of all nurses providing direct care to critically ill patient in the critical care units at the New El- Kasr El- Ainy in Cairo. All nurses had high satisfactory level of knowledge and performance related to the role of the nurse toward the critically ill patient. No statistical significant relation were found between nursing knowledge , performance and demographic characteristics. The study finding confirmed the importance of attending in service training as well as presence of continuing education centers in hospitals that serves an important services to employed nurses in both knowledge and performance.
