BYPASS GRAFTING PATIENTS
Research Abstract
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) given the high prevalence of risk factors, triple vessel disease, and poor left ventricular function in our Egyptian patients, it seems clear that changes in lifestyle should be encouraged in this population. Longer follow up will be necessary to evaluate the progression of atherosclerosis on both the native coronary circulation and on the coronary bypass grafts. this study is quasi-experimental aim was to design, implement and evaluate the effect of teaching program on the performances of nurses working with coronary artery bypass grafting patients. The study was conducted at Nasser Institute Hospital. Subjects consisted of all available nurses working with coronary artery bypass grafting patients (n=30). The tools of data collection included a knowledge questionnaire and an observation checklist, which were applied before and immediately after the intervention. the study revealed that nurses' knowledge and practice related to nursing care provided to patient with CABG surgery was deficient as they had a pre-program unsatisfactory in thirds of knowledge and they had a pre-program inadequate in almost of them in practice. Meanwhile, statistically significant improvements were demonstrated in both knowledge and practice at the post-program phase in practice (p<0.001) and knowledge (p<0.005). Knowledge and practice percentages had statistically significant positive correlations at the pre-program and post-program. Statistically significant positive correlations were revealed between knowledge percentages and nurse's age, experience and qualification at the pre-program phase. It is concluded that the developed teaching program led to significant improvements in nurses' knowledge and practice. Therefore, it is recommended that the developed training program be applied on a wider scale in similar settings to further confirm its utility and benefit
