Aromatic Organic Chemistry Introduction Organic compounds are classified into either aliphatic compounds that include alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes and their derivatives or aromatic compounds whose name has historic origin. It comes from the fact that organic compounds e.g. benzene and benzaldehyde were first isolated from naturally occurring products that have a pleasant smell. The term aromatic is now used to describe compounds with one or more benzene ring or having properties like benzene. Benzene Benzene was first isolated by Michael Faraday in 1825, has molecular formula C6H6, which means that it is highly unsaturated. Although it is unsaturated, it reacts by substitution and not by addition to give one mono-substitution product. This means that all six hydrogens in benzene are equivalent. Further reaction of bromobenzene with Br2 gives
