3.1 Regulations of the Faculty of Arts for Postgraduate Studies

3.1.1 Master degree of Arts 

Article 21: In order for a student to be enrolled in the preliminary year to obtain a master’s degree in arts, he must have obtained a bachelor’s degree in arts with at least a good grade from an Egyptian university, or an equivalent degree from another scientific institute which is recognized by the university.

Article 22: The student is allowed to take the preparatory year exam for the master’s degree in a period not exceeding twice the period of study, and to hold this exam twice a year, in September or November, and the student is not considered successful unless he obtains in each course of study at least 70% of the total  course grades , and if the student repeats a course in which he failed, he will be counted upon his success in it as the minimum level of success (70%). The student who failed in more than two courses is not allowed to take the second round exam
In case  of repeating the year, the student studies all courses
Article 23: The study period for pre-master's courses is one academic year.

Article 24: A student is prohibited from taking the pre-master's year exam if his attendance rate is less than 75% of each course.

Article 25: The duration of the written exam in any course of the preparatory year for the master's degree is three hours.

Article 26: The department may request a small research from one of the courses of the preparatory year for the master’s degree, which will have half the grade specified for the end-of-year exam, provided that the student submits the research to the professor of the subject two months before the start of the written exam.

Article 27: The student, after passing the exam for the preparatory year for the master's degree, prepares a dissertation on a topic for research approved by the Council of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the university based on the proposal of the College Council for at least one calendar year from the date of approval of the College Council on registration

Article 28: The enrollment period for a master's degree study does not exceed five years, and the College Council may grant the student two years as an exception for compelling reasons approved by the Council based on a report from the supervisor

Article 29: After registering the subject of his thesis, the master's student must reside at least one academic year in the Arab Republic of Egypt before submitting his thesis to the judging committee

Article 30: The discussion of the master's thesis shall be public, and a student who obtained a master's degree with an acceptable grade may not register for a doctorate

Article 31: In the master's degree certificate, the section of the student's specialization, the subject of his thesis, and the grade he received are clarified

The Master degree of Arts  is awarded with one of the following grades:

(a) Master of Arts, with an excellent grade.

(B) Master of Arts, with a grade of very good.

(c) Master of Arts, with a grade of good.

(D) Master of Arts with an acceptable grade.

Article 32: The schedules shown in the regulations show the academic courses in the preparatory year for the master’s degree in the various departments, and the number of hours allocated per week for each course.

3.1.2 Doctoral degree of Arts :

Article 33: In order for a student to be enrolled in Doctoral degree of Arts, he must have obtained a master’s degree in arts with a grade of “good” at least from an Egyptian university, or an equivalent degree from a scientific institute  which is recognized by the university.

Article 34: The doctoral student is preparing an innovative research on a subject approved by the Council of Postgraduate Studies and Research based on the proposal of the College Council for a period of at least two academic years from the date of approval of the College Council on registration, and the period of admission does not exceed five years, and the College Council may grant the student another two years as an exception for compelling reasons  which  was approved by the board and  based on a report from the supervisor.

Article 35: It is required that the doctoral student reside after registering the subject of his thesis for at least one academic year in the Arab Republic of Egypt before submitting his thesis to the judging committee.

Article 36: The discussion of the doctoral thesis shall be public.

Article 37: The doctoral certificate states the section of the student’s specialization, the subject of his thesis, and the grade he received.

The degree of Doctor of Arts is awarded with one of the following grades:

(a) Doctor of Arts with first class honors.

(B) Doctor of Arts with the second class of honor.

(c) Doctor of Arts.

(D) Graduate Diploma

3.1.3 Graduate Diploma

Article 38: For a student to enroll in any of the higher studies diplomas, he must have a bachelor’s  degree from an Egyptian university, or a degree from another scientific institute which is  recognized by the university
Article 39: For a student to enroll in any of the non-qualifying diplomas (Industrial Sociology Diploma, Applied Psychology Diploma, Cartography Diploma, Documentation Diploma) it is required to obtain a grade (good) in the Bachelor degree  of Arts  from the departments to which these diplomas belong. The  student who successes in this  diploma do not have to study the preliminary year courses which  related to the department from which he obtained the diploma, provided that he completes his postgraduate studies in the specialization in which he obtained the diploma.

Article 40: It is not required for a student to enroll in one of the two qualifying diplomas (in libraries or journalism) to obtain a grade of (good) at the bachelor’s level, but he does not complete what he succeeded in unless he obtained a very good grade in the diploma, and then joined a stage Master's Preparatory Year.

Article 41: For a student to enroll in a professional diploma in translation, consecutive and interpretation, he must obtain a grade of (good) in the Bachelor of Arts from the English Language Department or its equivalent, provided that he completes his studies for a master’s degree in the linguistics specialization and is exempted from studying in the preliminary year.

A student who has a Bachelor of Arts in the English language with an acceptable grade or who does not have a bachelor’s degree from another equivalent college from recognized universities has the right to enroll in a diploma after a written and oral exam, and he is not allowed  to complete his postgraduate studies for a master’s degree.

Article 42: The duration of study in non-qualifying diplomas is one academic year, and the duration of study in the two qualifying diplomas and the professional translation diploma is two academic years.

Article 43: The tables shown in the list of academic courses in each diploma show the number of hours prescribed per week for each course:

3.1.4 Transitional Provisions

Article 1: This regulation applies to the students of the first year in the currently existing departments and the departments that the College Council decides to start studying in, starting from the academic year 1993-1994

Article 2: Study continues for students transferred to the second year and beyond in the existing departments starting from the academic year 1993-1994 on the basis of the currently applied regulations (the regulations of the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University approved by the Supreme Council of Universities on 5/8/1984). until they are graduated.

Article 3: Applying this regulation to the remaining students to repeat in the first year during the academic year 1993-1994, provided that they are exempted from studying the courses they studied in the old list and succeeded in them.

Article 4: Studies begin at the postgraduate level (preparatory years and diplomas) starting from the academic year 1993-1994 according to these regulations.
