9.1 Regulation of the Faculty of Medicine for Postgraduate Studies

The internal regulations for postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine were issued by Ministerial Resolution No. 271 dated 2/2/2007.

Scientific degrees and diplomas issued by the College of Medicine

Article (2):

At the request of the Faculty of Medicine, Beni Suef University grants scientific degrees and diplomas in the following specializations:

First: (a) Diploma, Masters and PhD degrees in one of the following clinical specialization branches:

Internal diseases
Orthopaedic Surgery

Chest's diseases

anesthesia

Clinical physiology of the nervous system

Part Two: Conditions for joining and obtaining a degree
Article (3):

The Graduate Studies Committee of the college, through a committee formed for each discipline, sets up the detailed program for the courses and is approved by the department council, then approved by the college council. These courses include theoretical lectures, practical lessons, clinical training, in addition to scientific activities. These courses are reviewed and approved every five years at most.

These scientific activities are at least within the limits of the following:

(1) Masters:

♦ Attend the passage of the department regularly for a year.

♦ Attending (4) scientific conferences or a training course and two conferences or two training courses in the specialization

♦ Attending (4) scientific seminars for the department or other departments

♦ Attending (2) defense of a master's and doctoral dissertation

(2) PhD:

♦ Attend the passage of the department for at least two full semesters

♦ Attending (6) scientific conferences or (3) training courses in the general specialty

♦ Attending (4) scientific seminars for the department or other departments

♦ Attend a discussion of (4) master's theses and two doctoral theses

♦ Presenting at least two topics in the scientific seminars of the department or other departments or in the Journal Club.

♦ Preparing a protocol of work or treatment for one of the areas or activities specified by the department and submitted to the department of postgraduate studies in the college after the approval of the department council.

(a) Master's degree:

Article (4):

- The study period for obtaining a master's degree is four semesters (two years).

And it is in two parts:

The first part: a semester (6 months) followed by a comprehensive exam.

- The second part, and the thesis: three semesters of (18 months) duration.

The topic of the thesis is recorded at the beginning of the second semester, whether the student has passed the exams of the first part or not. The dissertation is discussed after two semesters have passed since enrollment for the degree and at least three months before the date of the second part exams.

Conditions for admission to the master's degree:

Article (5):

The student must be enrolled for a master's degree:

1- He must have a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from a university in Egypt or an equivalent degree from a scientific institute recognized by the university, with at least a good grade.

Holders of a bachelor's degree with pass grade are allowed to register a dissertation to complete the master's degree in the event that he obtains at least a good grade in the diploma and completes the required training courses to obtain a master's degree in Article (7) (a).

The thesis must be registered within a maximum of five years of obtaining the diploma and within the dates set for registration.

2- He should have completed the training year or its equivalent.

3- To devote himself to studying for at least one year in the second part (two semesters).

Article (6):

The application for registration for a master's degree shall be done once a year, during the month of July of each year.

Studying for a master's degree begins in October of each year.

Article (7):

In order to obtain a master's degree in one of the clinical branches and basic medical sciences, the student must:

A- Obtaining training courses accredited by the college in the fields of:

♦ Computer (Windows - Excel - Word, Power Point, Internet)

♦ Medical Statistics

♦ Methods of scientific research

B- Attending clinical, practical and laboratory courses and training in a satisfactory manner.

C- To work as an original resident doctor or visiting doctor for at least one year in the department of specialization for clinical sciences.

D- To succeed in the exams of the first and second sections.

E- To prepare a research on a subject approved by the university after the approval of the College Council, ending with the preparation of a thesis accepted by the discussion committee.

F- To fulfill the required scientific activities as determined by the department in accordance with Article (3)

Article (8):

The final grade for the diploma and master's degree is calculated as follows:

- 30% for the first section exam.

70% for the second section exam.

** The thesis without appreciation for the master's degree.

Article (9):

Examination system:

· Examinations for the first section of the master's degree are held in the second week of April, and whoever fails will retake the exam in the second half of September in the subjects that he failed in only
The exams of the second section are held during the months of November and May of each year, and the study in the second section does not begin until after success in all subjects of the first section.

Whoever fails in a study subject or a group (in the first or second section) shall take the exam in the subject or group in which he failed only.

The number of times to apply for the first section exam is determined by six sessions (three years), and if the student does not succeed during this period, his registration will be canceled permanently.

Registration for the examination starts at least one month before its date, and the door for submission closes one week before the start of the examination.

Article (10):

A student may not remain enrolled in study for a master's degree for more than four years, and the College Council may authorize him for a fifth and sixth year, after the approval of the Department Council based on the supervisors' report.

Article (11):

Grades for success and failure in the master's exams are calculated as follows:

Excellent from 85% or more

Very good from 75% to less than 85%

Good from 65% to less than 75%

pass from 60% to less than 65%.

a C-minus than 60%

very C-minus less than 30%

In the event that he obtains a C-minus score in two tests, the registration will be cancelled

Article (12):

The master's degree course in Basic Medical Sciences deals with lessons and lectures in the basic subject in which the student is applying for a master's degree and in one or more additional subjects designated by the Basic Subject Department Council from among the subjects decided by the University Council at the request of the Department Council.

(b) Specialization diplomas

Article (13):

The duration of the study to obtain a diploma in specialization is one and a half years (three semesters) and is divided into two parts:

The first section: one semester (six months) followed by a comprehensive exam.

The second section: two semesters (one year) followed by a comprehensive exam in the specialization.

Article (14):

Conditions for enrollment in one of the specialization diplomas:

1- In order for a student to enroll in a specialization diploma, he must have a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from a university in the Arab Republic of Egypt, or an equivalent degree from a scientific institute recognized by the university.

2- He should have completed the training year or its equivalent.

Article (15):

The student is required to obtain a specialization diploma:

A- Obtaining training courses accredited by the college in:

♦ Computer (Windows - Excel - Word - Power Point - Internet)

B- Attending academic courses and clinical and practical training in a satisfactory manner according to the approved hours.

C- To work as an original resident or visiting doctor for at least one year in the specialty department or in one of the hospitals approved by the College Council.

E- To succeed in the exams of the first and second sections.

Article (16):

The final grade for the diploma is calculated as follows:

- 30% for the first section exam.

70% for the second section exam.

Article (17):

Grades for success and failure in the diploma exams are calculated in the same system as the master's degree (Article 11).

Article (18):

A student who is registered for a master’s degree and has succeeded in the exam of the first section and did not complete the thesis within the registration period specified in the regulations can obtain a certificate of specialization diploma if he successfully performs the exams of the second section.

Article (19):

Applying for enrollment in specialization diplomas is done once a year in the same master’s system (Article 6).

Article (20):

The exam system for diplomas is the same as the master exam system (Article 9).

(c) Doctorate degree in medicine, surgery or basic medical sciences

Article (21):

In order for a student to be enrolled for a doctorate degree in medicine, surgery, or basic medical sciences, he must have obtained a master's degree in the subject of specialization from one of the universities of A.E., or an equivalent degree from another scientific institute recognized by the university.

Article (22):

The period of study to obtain a doctoral degree is at least three years (6 semesters), distributed as follows:

Part one:

♦ Basic sciences, a six-month semester, followed by a written and oral exam. The second part does not begin until all subjects are passed successfully.

Second part and message:

Five semesters of two and a half years.

After that, the student has the right to enter the final exam, provided that he has completed and accepted the thesis (6 months) before the exam date.

Message:

Registration of the thesis for four semesters begins at the beginning of the second semester after success in the first part, and it is discussed after its completion, that is, two years after the registration of the subject of the thesis.

Article (23):

♦ The student is awarded the degree after passing the first part exam and discussing the thesis

Passing a full semester after the discussion (at least 6 months) and passing the final exam successfully.

♦ Obtaining training courses accredited by the college in the field of "Quality in Health Care" in addition to obtaining the required training courses for a master's degree.

♦ Successfully passing the TOEFL certificate in English (according to the requirements of the university) and the International Computer Driving License (ICDL).
Article (24):

* The application for registration for the doctoral degree shall be twice a year, during the months of October and March of each year.

* The degree will be awarded in two rounds (May and November).

Article (25):

In order to obtain a doctorate degree in medicine, surgery or basic medical sciences, the student must:

* Attend the course in a satisfactory manner.

* To carry out innovative research on a subject approved by the university after the approval of the College Council for at least two years (in the second semester).

* To submit the results of his research a message accepted by the judging committee after discussing it.

* To successfully pass the written, clinical and oral exams prescribed in accordance with what is indicated in the regulations.

* To fulfill the required scientific activities as determined by the department in accordance with Article (3)

Article (26):

The student must register his name for the exam at least one month before its date.

Article (27):

For the student to succeed in the doctoral exam, it is required that the examination committee be satisfied with all the prescribed tests and in each of its parts separately, by taking the average of the committee members’ estimates.

Article (28):

The doctoral exam is held in November and May of each year.

Article (29):

It is not permissible for a student to remain enrolled in a doctoral degree for more than four years without presenting to discuss the thesis, and the College Council may give the student a period of one year in case the excuse is accepted, and it is renewed for another year.

Article (30):

Launching opportunities to apply for the final exam.

Article (31):

The doctoral certificate indicates the subject of the thesis and the exact specialization.

Chapter Three: Registration and Registration Rules

Article (32):

1- Papers and documents required for postgraduate registration

(Diploma - Master - PhD).

Each student submits a course containing the following documents:

1- Application for admission.

2 - Bachelor's degree showing the general grade and the grade for the specialization.

3- Certificate of spending the training year (excellence).

4- Birth certificate or an official extract thereof.

5- The approval of the employer to register and devote himself to studying (one year for a master's degree - one year or working as a resident doctor in a hospital recognized by the college council for a diploma) half-time for four semesters for a doctorate.

6- recruitment situation .

7- 6 recent photographs.

8- For expatriates, the student submits a letter from the embassy to which it is affiliated, which includes approval to enroll in postgraduate studies and identifies the party that bears the study expenses. He also presents a health certificate from the Ministry of Health stating that he is free of diseases.

9- For PhD applicants, the student otherwise submits a master's degree.

Article (33):

2- A student may be exempted from attending and examining some academic courses and their exams if it is proven that he attended similar courses and successfully performed the exams prescribed in a university college or scientific institute recognized by the university, within five years from the date of taking the exam or obtaining the certificate or degree.

Article (34):

It is not permissible for a faculty member to supervise the scientific theses submitted by one of his relatives up to the fourth degree, by lineage or in-law, with the application of this to the oral and practical examination, and it is also not permissible to participate in the judging committee.

Article (35):

A faculty member and his wife, father and son, brother and brother may not participate

In supervising the same message.

Article (36):

The number of supervisors for a master's or doctoral dissertation is not less than two and not more than three supervisors for a master's degree and four for a doctoral degree.

Article (37):

The degree-granting department participates with the other sub-departments in setting questions for the written, oral, and clinical examinations, and corrects the written papers for each of them, and the average score is taken.

Article (38):

The organizational responsibility for postgraduate examinations rests with the head of the department council
Article (39):

Suspension of entry:

Suspension of enrollment before the expiry of the original enrollment period at the request of the student or department to take care of the child - accompanying the husband or wife abroad - accompanying the parents for treatment abroad - recruitment - training grants and official missions - illness - or any excuse accepted by the College Council.

- At the end of the suspension period, the student or department must submit a request to lift the suspension of enrollment.

The registration deletion procedures are carried out for the following reasons:

1- Exhaustion of the number of times to apply for the exam of the first section of the diploma and master’s degree.

2- The expiration of the legal and exceptional period stipulated in the regulations.

3- The report of the supervisors on the thesis of irregularity and seriousness.

4- Non-payment of tuition fees.

Article (40):

A student is not considered enrolled in postgraduate studies unless tuition fees are paid.

Article (41):

Teaching assistants and assistant teachers are exempted from tuition fees and fees for improving student services.

Only a university patent certificate fee and fifty pounds will be obtained from them in case of extending the registration.

Article (42)

Research students, resident physicians, physicians working at medical colleges and university hospitals, scholarship students at universities, research assistants and research assistants at research centers and institutes, as well as teaching assistants and assistant teachers at the faculties of Al-Azhar University, assistant teachers and teaching assistants at affiliated colleges and higher institutes, are exempted.

part One :

- A 3-hour written test that includes the main course (two hours) and the additional course (one hour). The additional course test may be separate in a separate booklet, and the questions for it are supervised by the department entrusted with teaching that course.

A practical test and an oral test in the main and additional courses.

The second part :

Two written exams of 3 hours each + a practical exam + an oral exam.

Second: Master's degree in Basic Medical Sciences (Histology):

The list includes courses for that degree.

Fourteenth: Master's degree in cardiovascular diseases

- A practical test in the methods of electrical, dynamic and radiological diagnosis of the heart (in addition to the clinical cardiology).

Fifteenth: Master's degree in Pediatrics

Examination system

A 3-hour written exam in physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology + an oral exam.

A 3-hour written exam in pathology, bacteriology and embryology + an oral exam.

The second part :

A 3-hour written exam in genetics, growth and development + an oral exam.

- A 3-hour written exam in child care, including newborns and premature babies, nutrition and public health + a clinical exam + an oral exam.

- Two written exams of 3 hours each in pediatric diseases (including diets and clinical pathology) + a clinical exam and an oral exam.

Sixteenth: Master's degree in Industrial Medicine and Occupational Diseases

Examination system:

part One :

A 3-hour written exam in Industrial Medicine and Occupational Diseases + Physiology.

A 3-hour written exam in clinical toxicology + medical statistics + behavioral sciences + pathology.

- Oral exam in industrial medicine, occupational diseases, clinical toxicology, physiology and statistics.

The second part :

A 3-hour written exam in Industrial Medicine and Occupational Diseases + Internal Medicine.

A 3-hour written test in clinical toxicology.

A 3-hour written exam in industrial hygiene, industrial chemistry, and industrial process methods.
