Under the patronage of Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni Suef University, the Medical-Surgical Nursing Department at the Faculty of Nursing organized an awareness event on World AIDS Day. The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Abu Al-Hassan Abdel Mawgoud, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Hanan El-Zablawy Hassan, Dean of the Faculty; Dr. Sherine El-Sayed Sherif, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Iman Mohamed, Head of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Department; and Dr. Mona Mohamed Ibrahim, Event Coordinator. The event was attended by a large number of faculty members and students.

The University President explained that the awareness event addressed a range of key topics, including an introduction to World AIDS Day, modes of HIV transmission, and the stages of infection. The discussions also highlighted the importance of regular testing and HIV treatment, in addition to clarifying various prevention methods. These discussions were held within the framework of enhancing community awareness of the importance of dealing transparently with the virus, as part of ongoing efforts to combat the epidemic.

Dr. Hanan El-Zablawy noted that the Eastern Mediterranean Region is witnessing the fastest growth rate of the HIV epidemic, with estimates indicating that more than 620,000 people are living with the virus. Only 38% of cases have been diagnosed, and just 28% are receiving treatment, meaning that two out of every three individuals are unaware of their health status. This year’s World AIDS Day campaign calls on countries, communities, and partners to renew commitment, embrace innovation, and integrate HIV treatment services into broader health programs, in addition to combating stigma and structural barriers that hinder access to treatment and expanding efforts to confront the virus across the region.

The University President also expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to all participants who contributed to the success of the World AIDS Day event, affirming that their efforts had a significant impact on raising awareness and strengthening community commitment to combating the virus. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders to achieve the desired goals, stressing that collective action is the most effective way to address current health challenges.
