Under the patronage of Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni Suef University, the Biotechnology Department at the Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research organized a scientific seminar entitled: “The Role of Bioinformatics Databases in Research on Medicinal, Aromatic, and Economic Plants.” The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Abo Al Hassan Abdel Mawgoud, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Adel Mohamed Gouda, Dean of the Institute; Dr. Mohamed Zaki, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Sherif Hassan, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research; and Dr. Magda El-Sayed Abdel Gawad, Head of the Biotechnology Department. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Mohamed Ali Abdel Hamid, Assistant Research Professor at the Desert Research Center.
Dr. Tarek affirmed that the seminar comes within the framework of the university’s commitment to supporting scientific research and advancing the educational process. He noted that the university places great importance on promoting research in modern applied fields, including bioinformatics, given its pivotal role in developing research related to medicinal and aromatic plants and supporting the national economy by maximizing the utilization of plant resources. The seminar highlighted the importance of bioinformatics databases in collecting and organizing genetic and chemical data on plants, facilitating accurate access and analysis.
The seminar also reviewed the role of these databases in accelerating the discovery of active compounds and metabolic pathways, reducing the time and cost required for research experiments, and supporting studies of genetic diversity and crop improvement using modern technologies.
Dr. Adel Mohamed pointed out that the seminar addressed the contributions of bioinformatics in the fields of genetic engineering and functional analysis of genes and proteins, in addition to its role in evaluating the quality and safety of plant-based products and developing effective strategies for the conservation and management of plant resources.
The seminar witnessed distinguished scientific engagement from attendees, reflecting the keen interest of researchers and students in keeping pace with modern developments in biotechnology and its applications in the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors.
