The Department of Theatre and Drama at the Faculty of Arts, Beni Suef University, is presenting the theatrical performance “Forget Herostratus” under the patronage of Dr. Tarek Ali, President of the University; the supervision of Dr. Hamada Mohamed, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs; Dr. Abu El-Hassan Abdel Mawgoud, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Azza Farouk Gohary, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Dr. Rehab Youssef, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; and Dr. Omar Farag, Head of the Department of Theatre and Drama.
The play is scheduled to be performed at the Beni Suef National University Theater on Wednesday, May 13, as part of the practical projects of Theatre Department students. The play is written by the Russian playwright Grigory Gorin and directed by student Osama Gamil, featuring a cast of first-year students from the department.
The events of the play revolve around the character of “Herostratus,” inspired by Greek history, who sought to immortalize his name by committing a destructive act—burning the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Through this story, the play raises philosophical and human questions about the pursuit of fame and immortality at any cost, and the extent of society’s responsibility in creating such figures.
The performance relies heavily on the internal psychological conflict of the main character, discussing feelings of isolation, frustration, and inner emptiness within a profound dramatic and intellectual framework. The work is supported by philosophical and reflective dialogue that reveals the dimensions of the character and its struggle with both self and society, making the production closer to intellectual theater that encourages the audience to think and reflect.
The cast includes students: Sherif Zaki, Mohamed Abdel Qader, Amr Ali, Ahmed Hammouda, Mohamed Amin, Ayman Abu El-Naga, Nesma El-Sayed, Shaimaa Magdy, Rehab Hassan, and Walaa Mohamed Ali.
Lighting design is by student Ahmed Radi; linguistic revision by student Elham Afifi; décor and costumes by student Hamdy El-Mohamady; and musical preparation by student Mohamed Maghraby. Assistant directors include students Nesma Gamal, Ahmed Saud, Hassan Khalil, and Medhat Sabry.
